Dress Code

A dancer’s attire greatly determines the attitude toward her class work, and therefore we require that the standard of appropriate neatness be observed at all times.  The teacher may not allow class participation by a student who regularly neglects this requirement.

Hair:  In keeping with the traditions of classical ballet, girls should wear hair fastened securely in a bun on the back of the head.

Why is wearing hair in a bun important?  The correct use and placement of the head and neck are very important in dance for concentration and balance.  Thus when a dancer’s hair is in a bun, this allows the instructor to see the line of a student's body from the head down.

If a student has chin length hair which is difficult to place in a bun, pull hair into a ponytail and secure the sides back away from the face with clips or barrettes.

Jewelry:  Stud earrings are the only permissible jewelry to be worn in class.  Watches, necklaces, large rings and bracelets are not permitted.

Shoes & Tights:  All dancers should wear pink or skin-colored (for darker skin tones) ballet shoes (leather split sole preferred; canvas acceptable) and pink ("theatrical pink" preferred; "ballet pink" acceptable) or skin-colored (for darker skin tones) footed tights. Children wear same size as street shoe size, but should have a little room for growth.

Cover-Ups:  Students should wear more than just their leotard and tights to and from class; they should wear a modest cover-up (pants, shorts, ballet skirt, etc.) when outside of the studio.

The following are not acceptable in any class: tank or camisole tops, t-shirts, sweat shirts, shorts, warm up shorts or pants, pajama bottoms, or jazz sneakers.

Where to Shop:  The best place to buy dancewear is at a dancewear store.  This is especially true with shoes. Here are stores where students have previous purchased supplies. Mention "Perimeter Ballet" for a 10% discount.
